Experts estimate the total technical potential of geothermal energy at a spectacular 250,000 terawatt hours (TWh) – in figures: 250,000,000,000,000 kilowatt hours.
In other words, the earth's heat would be sufficient to cover Italy's annual electricity requirements more than 500 times. With its vast capacity and huge potential for climate protection, geothermal energy is today's choice source of renewable energy.
With its resolution of March 2007, the European Union has provided a strong impulse for the development of renewable energies. The Union's heads of state and government agreed on a plan to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By 2020, CO2 emissions are to be pushed down to 20% less than 1990 levels.
If Asia and the USA follow suit, the EU has committed itself to reduce greenhouse gas emissions even more and to drive levels to 30% lower than the 1990 benchmark. In this equation, renewable energies will not be offset by nuclear power. In effect, this resolution has boosted the key role of geothermal energy
as a base load-compatible form of energy.
